Proposal 38: Certificates for world records and making historical world records available [ Revision 2 ]
Committee: Review and Update the GuidelinesSubmitted on 2025-12-14
Status: Pre-Voting (Reviewed from January 06, 2026 to January 09, 2026)
Background
- riders should be recognised for breaking world records
- old records are of historical interest, and should be available on the IUF website/database
I propose:
- each current record holder is sent an IUF certificate recognising their achievement
- past record record holders may also request an IUF certificate for their achievement
- Each IUF record entry should display past records
Proposal
Old rule: nothing
New rule:
Section 1.9 World Record Certificates
- An official IUF World Record Certificate will be sent to every new world record holder. The certificate will display the record title and new record mark, the rider’s name, the date and location (place, city and country) of the record attempt, and the signature of the World Record Committee Chair, alongside the IUF logo.
- Past record holders may request an official IUF World Record Certificate provided the record was broken under IUF rules and approved by the IUF
- A charge may apply for postage and administration
Section 1.10 Record keeping
- The IUF will publish the current world records on the IUF website
- The IUF will archive old records and make them available on the IUF website
Body
It is important to recognise those who put in an effort to push the limits of our sport. Riders get medals for winning competition categories at IUF sanctioned events, so it is reasonable to provide something for those who break world records. This is a reason why riders choose to break Guinness world records rather than IUF sanctioned world records. They get a certificate to show for it.
Currently, the only thing a rider gets for breaking a record is an entry in the IUF website (which gets deleted when their record is broken).
The cost could be covered by IUF funds, but it is not essential. For instance, a courier/postage and printing fee is reasonable if the demand is greater than the budget allows.
I also propose that we list historical records on the IUF website. A world record is simply a snapshot in time. When we measure the progression of the sport, we need to see what past riders have achieved. Each IUF record entry should display past records as well as the current record (perhaps with a dropdown menu or subsection).
