Proposal 41: Finalizing structure of chapter 1 (General Information) [ Revision 1 ]
Committee: Review and Update the GuidelinesSubmitted on 2026-07-10
Status: Review from July 10, 2026 to July 15, 2026
Background
Since all chapters except Chapter 1 (General Information) have a consistent structure—specifically, with the rules divided into individual numbered paragraphs—we should apply this structure to Chapter 1 as well. In doing so, we should also rearrange some sections within Chapter 1.
Proposal
Old Rule:
1 GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 WHAT IS AN IUF WORLD RECORD
An IUF (International Unicycling Federation) world record is a unicycle world record recognised by the IUF as the best ever performance by a male or female in a recognised unicycling category, set in accordance with IUF World Record Guidelines.
If a rider equals a current IUF world record (within its required accuracy), it will be accepted on equal standing. In the record list riders’ names will be listed in ascending date order, i.e. oldest date at the top. The right to grant an IUF World Record lies solely with the IUF, and is subject to their discretion. In case an IUF World Record is refused, the IUF will state its reason(s) for doing so.
1.2 TERMINOLOGYRELATIONSHIP WITH IUF RULEBOOK
Unless stated otherwise, all definitions in the latest IUF Rulebook also apply to the World Record Guidelines.
World Records in disciplines that are governed by the IUF Rulebook must comply with the rules for corresponding competitions as per the IUF Rulebook version valid at the date of the attempt.
All standard Track Racing records, as well as the standard 10k Road Race record, must be done on unicycles that comply with either 16 Class, 20 Class or 24 Class. (Note that there are no separate records for these classes.)
All standard Road Racing records beyond 10k must be done on standard unicycles up to 29 Class.
1.3 ATTEMPTING AN IUF WORLD RECORD
All records attempts except time trials must be done during a publicly accessible competition, or on the same day of such a competition and using the facilities of that competition. Time trials may be done during a competition.
If you are planning a record attempt outside an IUF-sanctioned competition event, it is recommended (but not required) that you contact the IUF at least 4 weeks in advance.
If in a competition a rider would be DQ’d for a reason that is not because of the riding or jumping itself, this does not invalidate the result for a World Record. If in a competition a rider would be DQ’d (for whatever reason), he may still attempt a World Record on the same day.
1.4 NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS
For any discipline that is governed by the IUF Rulebook, a rider has the same number of attempts as specified by the Rulebook. For races this would normally be once (but twice for IUF slalom, slow races etc). For jumps the number in the current Rulebook (2017) is three attempts per height/distance, and twelve attempts overall.
This maximum number of attempts is allowed once per day (date), with the exception of a record attempt on the same day of a competition and using the equipment and officials already in place, in which case the attempt counter is reset. For time trial records, one attempt per day (date) is allowed.
The (first) attempt must be clearly announced by the rider, so that there is no misunderstanding whether the ride/jump was part of warming-up or a real attempt.
1.5 NEW IUF WORLD RECORD CATEGORIES
If you wish to attempt a world record in a category that is not recognised by the IUF, you may ask the IUF World Record Committee to consider adding the new record. This must be done at least 8 weeks in advance of your attempt. Your record is more likely to be approved if it meets the following criteria:
• the record is sufficiently different to an existing record
• the record is something other unicyclists want.
• it is in the best interests of the sport
• it has relevance to the sport
• it can be quantified
1.6 WORLD RECORDS SET AT UNICON
The IUF recognises world records set at UNICON to be of a standard acceptable for inclusion as an IUF world record. UNICON organisers must ensure they are compliant with the standards required for setting an IUF world record.
If it is not possible due to logistical reasons for UNICON organisers to comply with IUF World Record Guidelines (for instance, course constraints for marathon and 10km races), this must be communicated to participants at least 2 months in advance, and the riders informed that any records set will not be recognised as official IUF world records.
For a UNICON event to comply with IUF world record standards, they must fulfil documentation criteria in Section 2.3. Documentation criteria in Section 2.1 and 2.2 are not required for world records set at UNICON, provided they are set during official competition.
1.7 WORLD RECORDS SET AT NATIONAL AND LOCAL EVENTS
Organisers of national and local events have fewer resources to comply with the IUF world record standard. If you are a rider with the potential to break a world record, it is advised that you contact the organisers and work with them to ensure that they comply with IUF World Record Guidelines. Failure to do so may result in a record not recognised as an official IUF world record.
1.8 World Record Certificates
1. An official IUF World Record Certificate will be sent to every new world record holder. The certificate will display the IUF logo; the record title and new record performance; the riders name and nationality; the date and location (place, city and country) of the record attempt; and will be signed by a member of the world record committee.
2. Past record holders may request an official IUF World Record Certificate provided the record was broken under IUF rules and approved by the IUF.
1.9 Record keeping
1. The IUF will publish current records on the IUF website.
2. The IUF will archive former records and make them available on the IUF website.
3. World records set prior to establishment of the IUF World Record Guidelines or under earlier versions of the IUF World Record Guidelines may not be directly comparable to those set under the current guidelines. These world records are marked accordingly on the IUF website.
4. World records set prior to establishment of the IUF World Record Guidelines, or under earlier versions of the IUF World Record Guidelines, can be recertified upon submission of evidence that complies with the current IUF World Record Guidelines and thus listed without marking.
5. The IUF will keep previous editions of The IUF Rulebook and IUF World Record Guidelines and make them available on the IUF website.
